Reclaim Your Garage: Simple Decluttering and Organization Tips for a Stress-Free Summer

June is the perfect time to refresh one of the hardest-working spaces we have. Whether it’s a double garage, a single-car garage, a garden shed, or a storage locker in an apartment or condominium building, these areas often become home to everything from gardening supplies and sports equipment to seasonal décor and items we no longer use.

With summer activities ramping up, now is the ideal time to reclaim your space and make it easier to find what you need when you need it.

Start with Decluttering

Before organizing, take a good look at what’s actually being stored. Over time, garages and storage spaces can become holding areas for broken items, duplicates, and things we intended to use “someday.”

As you sort through your belongings, ask yourself:

  • Have I used this in the past year?
  • Is it still functional?
  • Do I have more than one?
  • Would someone else benefit from it more than I do?

Create simple categories: Keep, Donate, Sell, Recycle, and Trash. Reducing the volume of items is the most important step toward creating a functional space.

Clean and Maintain

Once you’ve decluttered, give the area a thorough cleaning. Sweep floors, wipe shelves, remove cobwebs, and check for signs of moisture or pests.

If you have a garage, June is also a great time to tackle a few maintenance tasks such as testing garage door sensors, lubricating hinges and tracks, checking weather stripping, and inspecting shelving for wear and tear.

A clean, well-maintained space not only looks better but helps protect the items you choose to keep.

Organize for Your Lifestyle

The best organizing systems are simple and practical. Group similar items together and create designated zones for categories such as gardening supplies, tools, recreational equipment, and seasonal items.

For smaller garages, sheds, or storage lockers, think vertically. Wall hooks, shelving, stackable bins, and clear labels can maximize storage while keeping items accessible.

Remember, organization isn’t about having more space, it’s about making better use of the space you have.
